Our History

The First Presbyterian Church of Port Jervis was organized in 1851, with members from Port Jervis and neighboring towns as well as New York City and Massachusetts. Because of the attraction to the Delaware River and nearby mountains, tourism has continued to attract a vast worshipping community.

Over the years activities in the church and community have been many. Fine choral and music programs were originally developed by Avery & Marsh, a talented team of composers and worship leaders. They also established Proclamations Productions, a church music publishing company serving churches around the world. Their songs have been distributed to 42 countries and translated into at least 7 languages. High Tea concerts and Presby Players have also been important to the community.

Our church is home to the original Banners of Faith patterns, representing the various creeds of the Presbyterian Church. These banners are now displayed in over 1100 churches worldwide, and the patterns are still cut and sold here.

If you are interested in purchasing or finding out more about the Banners of Faith patterns, please email or call the church office.

The Holiday Fair for World Hunger has been an important community event. Its purpose was to raise money for those who are hungry, both locally and worldwide. Over 30 years, a quarter of a million dollars has been contributed to this cause.

Mission has always been important to our church. We have supported world wide ministries, as well as local and national programs. Local Food Pantries and the Port Jervis Warming Station for the homeless are priorities.
